HMI houses UTA News en Español (#UTANE), a university Spanish-language television newscast unlike any other in the nation. UTANE leads the way in Spanish-language and bilingual broadcast journalism in the United States; it has successfully developed connections and collaborations with other universities leading to the creation of similar programs at institutions of higher education.
UTANE is driven by the power of public-private partnerships. UTANE partners with the two most important Spanish-language Television networks in the United States, Univision and Telemundo, by producing and airing newscasts and news reports in one of America’s most important television markets: Dallas, Texas. UTANE consistently reaches 40,000 television households (TVHH) and thousands of young adults of Hispanic descent through the unparalleled power of social media. UTANE prides itself in producing outstanding journalism targeting the demographic profile of the Hispanic population in the United States.
All undergraduate student members of UTANE are also members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and the NAHJ Student chapter at UTA. These students attend the NAHJ national conference every year. As a consequence, every student member of UTANE has successfully graduated with an undergraduate degree from UTA, and every student secures a professional position before or upon graduation.
The team-building, proactive professional networking, and employment opportunities developed through student participation in UTANE and the NAHJ national conferences are key factors in graduation and career placement success.
UTA NEWS EN ESPAÑOL
founded in 2010
UTA News en Español (#UTANE) began broadcasting in the spring of 2010, and, to this day, it continues to be the flagship platform of the Hispanic Media Initiative (HMI). Originally conceived as an end of semester project, it became a weekly television newscast in the fall semester of that same year.
UTA News en Español's pilot
Proyecto U is a partnership between Univision-Dallas (KUVN), UTA's HMI, and UNT. Students from two universities come together, work with professional journalists, and produce television newscasts airing on Univision23 in the 5th largest TV market in the United States.
Proyecto U was recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences during the 15th Annual Lone Star Emmy Awards.
educating tomorrow's bilingual TV journalists
Telemundo39 UNIVERSitario is a professional training ground for bilingual students pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The partnership matches students with professional journalists and focuses on hands-on development of TV news producers, technical operators, digital content creators, and multimedia reporters. Students are required to produce news reports and air these during one of Telemundo39's daily newscasts.
HMI + Telemundo
HMI IS PART OF THE TELEMUNDO NETWORK
HMI is now part of the Telemundo Network. Telemundo Stations are able to select student produced content and air such content in local markets across the United States. HMI students benefit in the form of recognition to the university and the student, an unquestionable highlight in the student's professional resume.
